Dr. Thomas A. Sabol specializes in structural consulting for complex institutional projects, seismic evaluation of structures, and tall building wind engineering. He earned his undergraduate degree in architectural engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and graduate degrees in earthquake engineering from UCLA.
He is a registered structural engineer and a licensed architect in California. Dr. Sabol is on the faculty of UCLA’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, where he teaches courses on tall buildings and structural steel. He is a member or the chair of AISC’s Seismic Systems, Specifications and Research committees.
Prior to its sale in 2021 to WSP, Tom was employed by Englekirk, a Los Angeles-based structural engineering firm. From 1980 until 2000, he served in a variety of positions, eventually advancing to become Englekirk & Sabol’s president. In 2000, Tom and his partners acquired Englekirk and he served as a principal. Following the firm’s sale in 2021, he remained at WSP as a senior vice president. Starting in 2024, he gradually reduced his day-to-day commitment to WSP. He remains an employee of WSP on an as-needed basis.
In 2025, Tom founded Thomas Sabol Consulting Structural Engineers, Inc. to provide a vehicle to continue working with a limited number of longterm clients and to undertake selected projects of interest.
